History
Novell LANs at K-State have typically been funded individually by the departments that
maintain them. Each department bought its own copy of the NetWare operating system, plus
as many components as it needed. As the environments grew, licenses needed to be added, at
extra cost. Some departments also bought upgrade protection to get access to new versions
of Novell software, which was an annual expense.Under the Novell site license
The Novell/MHEC ALA allows all K-State LAN administrators access to Novell's latest
software at a reduced price. A wide range of components are included to support
departments using the additional functionality, and upgrade protection is included.
Benefits
- Standardization
One of the challenges in providing centralized support is the disparity of the environment
on campus. Standardizing on versions of products will leverage existing support channels,
since they will be able to focus on the current release.
- Upgrade protection
Departments will have access to upgrades as they are released. Departments not covered by
upgrade protection will incur additional costs by purchasing new releases and licenses.
- Access to additional products
Products other than NetWare under this license are typically available only for node-level
licensing, i.e., a fee for each workstation using the product. This cost has proven
prohibitive for several departments.
Other benefits of the Novell/MHEC ALA include:
- Special Pricing
- Consolidated Service Support
- Training and Professional Development Opportunities
- Trial application of New Products
