Guidelines for licensed products
registration and distribution

Distribution
Products made available under the Novell/MHEC ALA may only be used by the participating departments. Any redistribution of products to other departments, faculty, staff, or students is not allowed except where explicitly designated. All products used or distributed must be accounted for. If the Novell/MHEC ALA is discontinued, each department will be responsible for either purchasing licenses for items used or discontinuing the use of items covered by the Novell/MHEC ALA.

Registration
Departments participating in the site license will be required to register with Computing and Network Services (CNS). A department head can register his or her department in writing by signing a letter agreeing to pay an annual fee based on the department's use of the licensed products.

A primary contact will be identified to represent the department for auditing, reporting, and support responsibilities. The primary contact must be a full-time department employee who will be available to coordinate use of the products in the department. A Web page listing registered departments and contacts will be publicly available.

As LAN environments change, the departmental contact will keep CNS informed of changes in their offering, (adding and discontinuing use of servers). Departments will be audited yearly. The audit is simply an annual report on usage of licensed products together with the total number of workstations, print servers, and file servers operated by the department.

Campus network compliance
The campus infrastructure supports a variety of environments. Since many different projects and initiatives share this infrastructure, any activities deemed to interfere with it should be discontinued. As part of participation in the site license program, departments are expected to comply with recommendations made by CNS staff.

Standards
A set of standards is being developed to define a structure for LAN implementation at K-State.  The use of a consistent implementation model provides a standard appearance to varied LAN environments and aids in the ability for central support agencies to provide assistance.  The guidelines are intended to provide a base from which to build a LAN environment.  Adherence to these guidelines is encouraged.
